Topps Star Wars Archives Signature Series
If you’re a Star Wars trading card collector, and you like autograph cards, the Topps Star Wars Signature Archive Card Series is well worth a look. This is a unique and varied set, combining the nostalgia of legacy cards, with a new attractive look and feel, and the exclusivity and scarcity of an on-card autograph.
Here’s what makes the set so cool. Firstly the cards are specific previous releases which are bought-back by Topps. These can be base cards, or some chase and inserts, from right back to the first Topps 1977 set and up to more modern releases. Secondly, the cards are uniquely hand-signed by actors, voice talent, or key production crew directly on-card. Any autographed card is a treat, but the story of these being previously circulated buy-backs and on-card adds some magic.
Finally, each card is then embossed with the “Topps Signatures Archive” logo in a stand-out gold foil, along with a serial number setting out how many of that specific card and autograph are within the set. They are housed within a plastic slab, with a tamper-proof ‘Archives’ sticker, making them durable, solid in-hand, and protecting the integrity and providence of the card. These details add a level of rarity, and appeal making them feel like true collector’s items.
To me, what makes cards exciting and fun to own is the story attached to them. Knowing you’ve got a limited-run card that was once in circulation, has been bought-back and treated with an autographed and such presentational care, makes the collecting experience rewarding. There’s a real thrill in tracking down and owning these sort of cards. What once may have been a common base card, turned into something a bit special.
The Topps Star Wars Archives Signature Series has so far only been released as one set in 2018. Here’s hoping there is another buyback programme and that we get this sort of thing again from Topps. It’s a brilliant celebration of Star Wars card collecting, and autographs specifically. If you’re looking to elevate your Star Wars card collection, or just pick up a bit of unique memorabilia, this series delivers in spades and often for an affordable price, time to set an Ebay alert!
